During the Cold War, Royal Air Force Germany was the primary operator of the RAFs Harrier fleet. Its Harrier unit was the only formation that routinely deployed large numbers of combat aircraft to unprepared sites and woodland locations while maintaining constant combat readiness. This bookthe first of three volumes covering the RAF Germany Harrier unitchronicles the aircraft's evolution from a simple concept-demonstrator prototype into a far more sophisticated combat machine, a process that involved overcoming the immense challenges inherent in vertical take-off and landing. It recounts the establishment of the Harrier squadron at RAF Wildenrath in 1970 and describes how, during the accident-prone early years, personnel learned the hard way how to fly and operate the "Jump Jet"both at base and in the field. Volume 1 concludes at the turn of 1973/74, when, having successfully demonstrated its capabilities, the Harrier squadron was upgraded to become the Harrier Force (a more comprehensive formation).
