This book fills a gap. To date, the civilian population in European nations occupied by the Nazis has played little role in the remembrance of victims. Consequently, this accountorganized by country and regionfocuses not on military events, but on the fate of the civilian population, daily life under occupation, the resistance of the occupied, and the terror inflicted by the occupying power. The book makes a necessary contribution to the ongoing debate regarding a memorial to Polish victims and a documentation center in Berlin dedicated to all victims of Nazi occupation policy.
