The day of the apocalypse seemed to have come. Almost half of the city was destroyed by the tragic explosion of the Delft ammunition depot in 1654. Ten years later, the city fathers now want to commemorate the great firestorm. The painter Sarah Meulemeester is to create a painting of the catastrophe. But she hesitates. She had experienced the disaster at close quarters and is still tormented by nightmares. Her friend and fellow painter Johannes Vermeer persuades her to accept the commission anyway. But on the morning of the memorial service, the painting suddenly disappears. And all of a sudden Sarah begins to doubt that the "Thunderclap of Delft" was just an accident.
