The second edition of this classic has been expanded to include new information from recently discovered government documents and numerous colour photographs. It includes prototypes and production models of the M14 rifle and its commercial semi-automatic counterparts, contractors, subcontractors, experimental models, match and sniper rifles, modern M14 rifles, training, magazines, parts and accessories, ammunition, maintenance and much more. The M14 rifle was officially introduced on 1 May 1957 to replace the M1 Garand rifle as the Standard A infantry weapon of the US Armed Forces. The M14 was the result of a long series of experimental and prototype weapons. The developments that led to the introduction of the M14 began in 1944 with the T20 series of M1 rifles. The T20 rifles were M1 Garands that had been modified for semi-automatic and fully automatic operation. The M14 was intended to replace the Browning Automatic Rifle, the M1 rifle, the M1 and M2 carbines, and the M3A1 submachine gun. The M14 rifle, together with the newly introduced 7.62 mm M60 multi-purpose machine gun, was designed to meet all the requirements of infantrymen while using a standardised cartridge.
