Hans Talhoffer is one of the most famous medieval fencing masters of all, as more than a dozen fencing manuscripts by him have survived. His most opulent work was produced as a pictorial manuscript in 1467.
On 268 plates, the techniques of medieval duels with all the weapons in use at the time were depicted: such as with sword, dagger, shield, axe, butt; on foot and on horseback; in armour and unarmoured.
This reprint of a complete edition from 1887 not only reproduces all the plates in detail, but also offers an essay on the development of the art of fencing taken from the original version, which shows how much the understanding surrounding the medieval fencing sources has changed in the past 100 years.
The pictorial epigraphs written by Talhoffer have been completely re-transcribed for this edition and translated into modern German. A concise introduction and a compact glossary round off this volume. With a contribution by Gustav Hergsell.
