At the beginning of the First World War in 1914, the British Army had only 80 trucks and 20 cars at its disposal. By the end of the war in 1918, this number had increased by a further 59,490 trucks and 33,800 cars and ambulances. This policy of motorisation made the British Army the most mechanised of all the warring nations. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the military trucks used by the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. It covers British-built, custom-made and requisitioned general-purpose trucks from well-known manufacturers, from AEC to Wolseley. It also presents trucks not built in Great Britain that were used by the British armed forces and originated mainly from the USA. Further chapters deal with workshop trucks, tankers, gun carriages, steam cars, tractors and tractors. This expanded and updated new edition now also includes ambulances, fire engines, recovery, repair and disposal vehicles.
