The Panzer IV was a mainstay of the German Panzerwaffe, in continuous service from the early days of World War II until its end. Although often overshadowed by the more famous Tiger and Panther tanks, the Panzer IV played a critical role in German armored operations. Its straightforward design and ease of production made it the most-built German tank. In contrast to the complex designs of the Tiger and the Panther, the Panzer IV was produced in large numbers even as German industry faced relentless Allied air attacks. Originally armed with a short-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 24 cannon, the Panzer proved insufficient against the robust Soviet T-34 and KV tanks during Operation Barbarossa. To counter this, the Panzer IV was gradually upgraded with the long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/43 and later the L/48. Its armor was improved throughout its production run, though it often remained vulnerable to enemy fire. The Panzer IV chassis provided the basis for numerous specialized vehicles, including the Nashorn tank destroyer, the Hummel self-propelled howitzer, and the StuG IV assault gun. In addition, variants such as anti-aircraft and recovery tanks were produced, further increasing the versatility of the Panzer. This extensive three-volume series provides an in-depth examination of all Panzer IV variants, from the earliest prototypes to specialized adaptations. It also presents the combat histories of selected units of the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS. With approximately 2,000 photographs, 1,000 detailed 2D and 3D drawings at 1:35 and 1:16 scales, and 64 pages of full-color art per volume, this series is an indispensable resource for historians, modelers, and military enthusiasts.
