The American M47 Patton is one of the least known tanks of the Cold War, but in this carefully researched book, US vehicle historian David Doyle reveals its history. Faced with the real threat of a Third World War, the M47 was rushed into production in 1951 as an improved medium tank. Fortunately, the dreaded global conflict was averted, and for the United States, which had developed the M47, it actually proved to be a transitional tank that saw less than a decade of service. However, for many of the nations around the world that used it, the M47 served well for many years some were even in service until 2024. This achievement is all the more impressive when you consider the history of its development and production, which was far more complicated than that of many other military systems, including far more complex ones. Based almost entirely on primary sources and richly illustrated with previously unpublished images, this work reveals the history of the M47, one of the longest-serving armoured combat vehicles. It is an essential addition to the library of model builders, vehicle enthusiasts and historians alike.
