At the end of the Second World War, Germany was a country in ruins. The Allied bomber formations had done their job thoroughly, causing damage on an apocalyptic scale. Many city centres had been wiped out, German industry had been largely destroyed and the railway system had been completely ploughed up. In addition to the war-critical armaments industry, the German Reichsbahn was the primary target of attack, almost constantly in the crosshairs of the Royal Air Force and US Army Air Force squadrons. The reconnaissance flights carried out by the Americans immediately after the conquest of German territories served only one purpose: to photographically document the extent of the war damage. In the process, almost all German cities were systematically recorded in countless vertical and oblique aerial photographs. The views of the destroyed railway facilities are both shocking and impressive. With their railway-specific explanations, the aerial photographs shown are unique in their documentary value.
