A review of the first German long-distance railway.
The Leipzig-Dresden Railway was the first major long-distance railway line in the German Empire. It was opened in 1839, only shortly after the Nuremberg-Fürth line, and was initially privately owned and operated. Great expectations were associated with it in terms of freight transport, which suffered from the poor road network, but also in terms of strategic issues of warfare and militarism, so that this report on the economic and infrastructural results of the first 25 years of operation was eagerly awaited. As expected, it was positive - so positive that the railway company was nationalised a few years later.
