After the Second World War there was a lack of textbooks for the training of locomotive drivers. The Reichsbahndirektion Schwerin solved this problem in an original way: It had so-called instruction letters printed for the pupils of the locomotive driving school in Güstrow. These letters were also very successful in other Reichsbahndirektionen, so that they were quickly out of print. For this reason, all the essays were published again in 1949 in one volume, which is now available again as a reprint. The book teaches all the technical basics that one needs to know for the steam locomotive driver's examination. It starts with the technical details and continues with combustion, fire treatment and steam science, the function of the steam engine and the locomotive chassis. Numerous drawings round off the work.
