Volume 25 of the series "Imagenes de Guerra". The story of the largest convoy battle of World War 2, in which German submarines, torpedo planes and dive bombers fought for days in an attempt to block Allied supply routes by sea to Russia. It is the tragic story of the convoy PQ 17, which was abandoned by the protecting cruisers and destroyers halfway between Iceland and Arkhangelsk and whose merchant ships were ordered to make their way to Russia one by one.
In June 1942, PQ 17 gathered off Iceland, a large convoy of about 40 ships. Shortly after setting sail, the convoy was reported by a German long-range reconnaissance plane. German fighter planes then began their air attacks, while ten submarines of the "Eisteufel" group kept in touch and moved into attack position. A German surface combat group led by the battleship "Tirpitz" left the Altafjord in northern Norway. Together with the heavy cruisers "Lützow" and "Admiral Hipper" as well as destroyers and torpedo boats, this was an extremely powerful battle group.
