Malta was key to the hard-fought naval campaign in the Mediterranean, a link in the vital Axis supply lines between Italy and North Africa. Under constant Axis bombing, Malta was dependent on supply convoys to survive. Axis air units dominated the airspace and made any attempt to relieve the island extremely dangerous. In December 1941, a convoy from the east led to an inconclusive battle with the Italians in the First Battle of Sirte. When the British tried again at the end of March 1942, the situation escalated. The decisive battle took place on the afternoon of 22 March. British destroyers launched a series of spirited torpedo attacks against the Italian battleships, and in the evening the Italians called off the action. At dawn, however, Axis aircraft appeared and a series of intense air attacks followed, forcing the British to call off the operation. All four merchant ships in the convoy were lost. This richly illustrated title by naval historian Angus Konstam shows the importance of radar, reconnaissance and air power, but above all of determination and tenacity in the face of a superior enemy. It remains one of the most daring naval battles of the war.
