Description
The "Arleigh Burke" class-often referred to by the U.S. Navy as the DDG-51 class-is a class of guided-missile destroyers that possess diverse offensive and defensive capabilities. With 68 ships currently in service, it is one of the U.S. Navy's most built ship classes in terms of numbers since World War II and the most built since the end of the Cold War.
The first ship of this class was commissioned in 1991. Production was originally scheduled to end in 2012 with the 62nd unit. In 2009, it was decided to reduce the number of planned "Zumwalt"-class units and to build more "Arleigh Burke"-class ships instead. Further planning assumes the construction of 20 to 40 additional units by the 2030s. These ships are the first US naval units to be developed using stealth principles. They can be deployed as lone riders independent of other surface units or as part of amphibious task forces, in formation or as an air defence or anti-submarine component of an aircraft carrier convoy. The best-known destroyer of the "Arleigh Burke" class is the U.S.S. "Cole", which was severely damaged in a terrorist attack on the ship in the Middle East in 2000. On 48 pages you will get a detailed insight into the development history, an overview of all 89 ships built so far and those in planning, as well as the technical equipment of the "Arleigh Burke" class.
