Task Force 58 was the most powerful battle fleet of the Second World War. Formed in mid-1944 from 16 aircraft carriers, over a thousand fighter planes and an armada of escort ships, it was decisive in the victory over Japan. In this gripping account, Evan Mawdsley traces the Big Blue Fleet's 3,500-mile voyage through the Central Pacific in the first six months of 1944, during which it overwhelmed enemy resistance and changed the nature of naval warfare. In the sea and air battle around the Philippines in June 1944, enemy naval air forces were crushed and vital air bases in the Mariana Islands were secured. Mawdsley examines the elements of the rapidly assembled force - ships, planes and 100,000 officers and men - as well as the forward bases and naval fleet that enabled such astonishing mobility. With the deployment of Task Force 58, the US gained supremacy over the seas, which it retains to this day.
