The Group of Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD) stationed in the GDR was the largest contingent of forces deployed outside the Soviet Union. From 1989 it was called the West Group of Troops (WGT). It occupied an area of 290000 hectares with 1115 properties and 777 barracks. The stationing of five armies and the 16th Air Army was associated with manifold side effects and costs. The author gives a first-hand account of the costly remediation of their legacies.

In 1989, the partial withdrawal of four Soviet divisions and missile complexes from the GDR began. On 12 October 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Soviet Union concluded the Residence and Withdrawal Treaty. 546200 military and family members of the WGT left Germany. The author describes how their homeland was not prepared to receive them. The soldiers left as defeated victors into social nothingness. The repatriation of the troops with their extensive combat technology and equipment took place until August 1994. This historically unprecedented military-logistical operation by sea, land and air is described in detail in the book.
