How is it that Vladimir Putin's imperial complexes and aggressive pipe dreams prove to be capable of winning majority support in Russian society? Why was there so much enthusiasm for war among Russians, including those living abroad? Why does the officially propagated hatred of Ukrainians, Americans and Europeans fall on such fertile ground? In his book, Moscow-born Russian journalist Andrey Gurkov, who lives in Cologne, explores the historical, cultural, political and mass psychological reasons for this phenomenon. At the same time, he warns urgently against the illusory expectation that, once the war in Ukraine is over, Germany and Europe will be able to restore their former relations with Russia Russian society no longer sees itself as part of the European community of values; Europe has become an enemy. Andrey Gurkov's view of his homeland is as analytical as it is unsparing more unsparing than German authors would perhaps dare to be.
