The armed forces under democracy in Chile

This work integrates approaches from the fields of governance, democratization, and policymaking to examine the evolution of military policy in Chile since the return to democracy. It presents current research findings that shed light on the arduous process of overcoming the civil-military tensions of the 1990s, as well as the challenges posed by 21st-century security demandssuch as the militarization of efforts to combat urban crime and pandemics, and the associated impact on human rights. Furthermore, the book highlights failed policy measures, the neglect of governance aspects, and the erosion of democratic practices. The volume addresses eight thematic areas fundamental to understanding the modern management of the armed forces: the state of civil-military relations; political change and the subordination of the military to civilian leadership; roles and missions; military effectiveness; budgetary expenditure; interagency challenges; international deployments; and transparency and corruption.
