The Eichmann Affair: Bonn and the BND's Jerusalem Operation. Konrad Adenauer saw the Eichmann trial as a threat to the reputation of the Federal Republic, where many functionaries of the Nazi state had regained influence. Chancellor's Office Chief Hans Globke, who had been active at the heart of the racist agenda and had styled himself as a secret resistance fighter after 1945, had the most reason to fear potential revelations. He therefore allowed the BND to infiltrate the Defense Office, which then meticulously reported on the mental state of the Jewish murderer Adolf Eichmann and the strategy of his lawyer, even influencing it.
