Security was a central guiding principle of state-socialist dictatorships. Throughout the Eastern Bloc, secret police forces bore the term in their very names. But they were not the only actors who defined and implemented security. This volume examines constructions and practices of security in socialism, primarily focusing on the GDR and the Soviet Union. It centers on power relations between security services and state parties, cooperation with the regular police, and the self-conception of the secret security organs. In doing so, the volume opens up new perspectives on the meaning of "security" in state socialism.
