The watery, heavily vegetated marshlands of the Mekong Delta served as a formidable natural defence for Viet Cong units in the region, and the waterways served as a transport corridor for communist forces. The Mobile Riverine Force formed the bulk of what later became known as the Brown Water Navy, and was key to American efforts in the region to disrupt the enemy's activities. Elsewhere in Vietnam, the dense jungle also posed an obstacle to the rapid movement of Allied troops, so helicopters played an increasingly important role in the military, being used as troop carriers, cargo carriers, medical evacuation units and even as attack helicopters.
