The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) was a top-secret, inter-agency US special forces unit that carried out covert operations before and during the Vietnam War. The unit carried out strategic reconnaissance missions in South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, hunted down enemy personnel, rescued downed pilots and carried out rescue operations to free Allied prisoners of war throughout Southeast Asia, and conducted covert agent team activities and psychological operations. This book tells the story of the teams that operated in 1968-69 from the forward operating base Kontum, near the tri-border area. From reconnaissance missions across the fence to the heroic and sometimes deadly efforts made to rescue missing SOG members, the events are recounted through the words of the men themselves, supported by previously unpublished official documents.
