The book tells the story of the 1-320th Field Artillery Battalion, 101st Airborne, in the Arghandab Valley, 2010-2011. The Arghandab River Valley is known for its lush vegetation, with its rows of vines and pomegranate orchards. It is also known as the birthplace of several Taliban leaders, including Mullah Omar and Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, and was an important route for the transport of weapons from Pakistan to Kandahar. This hostile environment had already claimed the lives of many experienced infantrymen. But the Top Guns were not infantrymen, but artillerymen who were deployed without their usual weapons and with minimal infantry training and converted into provisional infantrymen. This harrowing account of Batteries Alpha, HHB and Bravo taking on the challenges of an artillery unit tasked with an infantry mission in the most hostile battlefields of Afghanistan has been carefully researched by one of the Top Guns and told from the perspective of the men who survived that terrible year.
