Between 1887 and 1895, the British art student Miles Vandercroft traveled around the world, sketching and painting the soldiers of the countries he visited. It was an era of dramatic technological advancement, and Vandercroft was fascinated by how the rise of steam technologybeginning with the American Secession Conflicthad transformed warfare and the role of those involved in the fighting.
