Between 1887 and 1895, the British art student Miles Vandercroft traveled around the world, sketching and painting the soldiers of the countries he visited. It was an era of dramatic technological advancement, and Vandercroft was fascinated by how the rise of steam technologybeginning with the American Secession Conflicthad transformed warfare and the role of those involved in the fighting. This volume presents a complete collection of Vandercrofts surviving drawings. The images are accompanied by Vandercrofts own commentary on the military units that crossed his path. It serves as a unique illustrated guide to the final era of resplendent, colorful uniforms, and simultaneously as an important historical study of the diverse steam-powered weaponry and equipment that enjoyed its heyday in the days immediately preceding the Great War of the Worlds.
