The Eurofighter Typhoon is one of the most modern multi-role combat aircraft in the world with simultaneous air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities. It is currently in service with several air forces worldwide and has proven itself in operations in Libya, Iraq and Syria. The Typhoon is made of advanced composite materials that give it a low radar profile and a robust airframe. Only a small percentage of the aircraft's surface is metal, allowing stealthy operation and protection from radar-based systems. Pilots were involved in the design from the outset to develop a deliberately unstable airframe that can still be flown effectively, offering both superior manoeuvrability at subsonic speeds and supersonic capability for a wide range of combat scenarios. The Eurofighter Typhoon is also at the forefront of sensor technology, and sensor systems are constantly being improved to enhance reconnaissance and operational capabilities. The PIRATE infrared sensor provides passive air-to-air target detection and tracking in IRST mode for covert tracking and air-to-ground operations in FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) mode. In addition to short-range air-to-air missiles and the 27mm Mauser cannon, the Typhoon features the latest beyond visual range air-to-air missile technology. In the near future, the advanced long-range Meteor missile will also offer a long stand-off range. The Laser Designator Pod (LDP) enables precise target location and guidance of air-to-ground weapons, and the Typhoon has been upgraded with the Paveway IV, which features a combat-proven dual-mode guidance system equipped with a high penetration capability. The Defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS) includes electronic support measures and electronic countermeasures (ESM/ECM) in the wingtips, missile detectors and chaff and heat decoys. The aircraft is equipped with the mechanically scanned Captor-M radar and the electronically scanned Captor-E radar is the future primary sensor. The pilot is equipped with a unique Helmet Mounted Symbology System (HMSS) that provides flight references and weapon data through his visor and is fully compatible with night vision devices and forward looking infrared imagery (FLIR). The Eurofighter Typhoon is a highly manoeuvrable aircraft designed to be a highly effective air-to-air fighter and ground attack platform that will be in service for many years to come. This book is aimed at modellers and enthusiasts with historical details, walkarounds, colour profiles and instructions for modelling the Typhoon in common scales.
