History and changing meaning of a symbol. No other symbol has such an inglorious past as the swastika, which has stood for "racial mania, barbarism and German imperialism" since its use by the National Socialists. However, the history of the swastika is by no means limited to our recent past - on the contrary, it goes back a long way. With a cultural comparison, the author goes in search of traces. Using archaeological sources, she examines the appearance of the swastika in the Near East, in the Indian and Asian cultural areas as well as in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to considerations of symbol theory, the question of possible meaning or a change in meaning is at the centre of her observations. Paperback. 133 pages.
