With an introduction: "The Oriental Question as a Cultural Question" by Hermann Vámbéry and historical-ethnographic notes by Karl Emil Franzos. This extensive study is the result of extensive travels and a stay of several years by the author in Turkey. About half of the text deals with south-eastern Europe, its geography and ethnography, history and culture. The other half deals with the situation of the Ottoman Empire between the Crimean War of 1853-1856 and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/78. In addition, the history of Bulgaria and Serbia is also dealt with.
