Titled with the battle cry of the sailors of the Serenissima, this book portrays the history of Venice from a very special perspective: from the point of view of its fleet. Illustrated with a large number of mostly colour illus, the volume describes the development of the lagoon city from its emergence as an independent city-state to its steep rise to become the decisive maritime and trading power in the Mediterranean during the high and late Middle Ages, the conflicts with the rival maritime republics of Genoa and Pisa, the long-lasting battles against the Ottoman Empire and finally the gradual decline in the 18th century and finally the end of independence in the 18th century.
However, the volume not only describes the political-historical development of the Maritime Republic of Venice, but also takes a very detailed look at the development of Venetian military seafaring. Various illustrations show the appearance of Venetian warships at different times. In addition, the volume provides information on the changes in the ship's armament as well as the structural and technical development of the legendary arsenal.
