No civilian was allowed to enter the Bug, the peninsula in the extreme northwest of the island of Rügen, until recently. It was a restricted military area for almost 80 years: the imperial fleet built a base for its naval pilots on this headland during the First World War. The Nazis used the remote stretch of land for their plans for secret air armament. After the Soviet Union dismantled the facilities, the National People's Army stationed a naval unit geared towards enemy contact.
Today, the time of military use is over, and investors are trying to build a large recreational park. The multifaceted history of this area can be relived in pictures and text.
