This volume examines from a European perspective the processes of conquest, domination and administration as well as their subsequent justification and historiographical treatment. In 17 contributions by scholars from Switzerland, Italy, France and Great Britain, the roughly simultaneous conquests of Habsburg Aargau in 1415, the annexation of large parts of present-day France by the English king during the Hundred Years' War and the expansion of rule by rural communes and towns in the Upper Italian region are examined comparatively. In the process, a surprisingly coherent picture emerges of conquest and seizure as structural elements of political change in late medieval Europe far beyond individual regional cases.
