Description
The chronicler Widukind of Corvey described Otto I as "Emperor of the Romans, King of the Nations" when he wrote about his death on 7 May 973. This new biography, published on the 1050th anniversary of Otto's death, combines written, pictorial and archaeological evidence as well as the research results of the past 20 years to create a new overall view of the great emperor.
Aimed at a broader interested public and specialist scholars alike, the most important stations of Otto's life as well as the central Ottonian places of activity and the most important symbols of rule as well as his European significance through the re-foundation of the Roman Empire in 962 are described in a vivid form. The high-quality illustrations of contemporary testimonies are made to speak through insightful interpretations. In this way, the book familiarises readers with the world 1000 years ago and invites them to visit the original sites in Saxony-Anhalt as well as Central and Southern Europe.
