Description
For four generations the Hohenstaufen led huge armies into the Orient. With their crusades they cut deep swathes in the eastern Mediterranean world, but also at home. When the Hohenstaufen called for a crusade, the Germans followed them in enormous droves. They accepted immense hardships and dangers for their march to the Orient. More than once, the German crusades resulted in mass deaths.
Nevertheless, during the era of the Hohenstaufen there were always thousands and thousands who were prepared to risk everything for the fight for the Holy Land. The religious war had a profound effect on the people of the High Middle Ages that we can hardly imagine today. And the Germans were at the centre of the action.
