Volume 5 of the series From Alexander to Adrianople 3000 BCE-400 CE. The fall of the Later Han Dynasty plunged China into one of the most dramatic and formative phases of its long military history. Amidst rebellions, regional fragmentation and bitter civil wars, rival warlords fought for supremacy in the so-called Three Kingdoms wars. At the centre of this storm was Cao Cao - statesman, poet, strategist and one of the most controversial figures in Chinese history. In popular culture, Cao Cao is often portrayed as a ruthless schemer and unpredictable commander, almost a villain in the epic tradition of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. But such portrayals are largely due to later literary embellishments and hostile propaganda. In Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Carl Fredrik Sverdrup returns to the primary sources to reconstruct Cao Cao's military career in its actual operational and political context. This study removes centuries-old myths and moral judgements and re-evaluates his campaigns with new analytical clarity. From the chaos of the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 189 CE to the consolidation of northern China under Cao Cao's rule, this book traces the evolution of warfare in a fragmented imperial world. It examines the organisation of armies, the logistical challenges of campaigning across vast territories, the use of fortified cities and river systems, and the shifting alliances that characterised this era. Cao Cao's approachhis ability to recover from setbacks, exploit rivalries, and bring strategic coherence to chaosis assessed not as legend but as military reality. The narrative does not end with Cao Cao's death in 220 CE. The campaigns of Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi extend the story to 238 CE, providing a broader perspective on how the conflict evolved and how the foundations for the later Jin dynasty were laid. Through these figures, the book examines the interplay of political authority, personal leadership, and the art of war in early imperial Chinese warfare. Drawing on extensive Chinese primary sources and modern research, Wars of the Three Kingdoms offers a detailed and critical military history of an era too often filtered through romantic fiction. It places the struggles of Wei, Shu, and Wu in the larger context of state formation, institutional adaptation, and the enduring traditions of Chinese strategic thought. This is not simply a biography of a warlord, but a rigorous operational history of a transformative era. By revisiting the campaigns of Cao Cao and his contemporaries, Sverdrup offers readers a deeper understanding of how power was seized, defended, and contested in the Chinese world at the beginning of the third centuryand why the legacy of these wars continues to reverberate in East Asian history to this day.
