Description
A travel guide to Austria's youngest World Heritage Site: For about 500 years, the Danube in what is now Austria was the border of the Roman Empire. Only the remains of settlements and villas, roads, forts and watchtowers remained - but they offer an insight into the life and culture of the time before 488. Some findings are less than two years old, others are so old that the sources no longer even exist.
With his usual expert, informative and entertaining style, historian and cultural traveller Peter Schubert describes the individual Limes sites and surviving relics. In addition to introductory explanations of Roman history along the Danube in Austria and an outline of those emperors who became particularly important for the Limes, the reader also learns a lot of interesting facts about the Roman army, the Danube flotilla as well as settlements, buildings and roads as typical traces of Roman rule along the Danube. Background information on Roman currency, religion and the population of the provinces of Noricum and Pannonia (Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes) as well as references to the respective museums are of course also included.
