The Greek campaign of the Persian Great King Xerxes I has not yet been analysed from a consistently eastern perspective. The inscription of Xerxes from Persepolis XPl provides a methodological basis for this as a guide to an Achaemenid programme. The reassessment of the Greek campaign on the basis of this inscription is neither a corrective to existing research nor an attempt to reconstruct the campaign comprehensively in terms of events or military history. Rather, Hilmar Klinkott uses it as a key to understanding completely different, grand-royal accents, objectives and evaluations, which thus also characterise the overall picture of the campaign. For in contrast to the Greek perspective, the endeavour was a success for Xerxes in certain respects.
