The uprising of gladiators and slaves led by Spartacus is among the most famous events of antiquity. Often interpreted ideologically, it is frequently taken out of its actual political, social, and economic context and portrayed as a symbol of freedom and a precursor to modern revolutions. However, the perspectives of ancient historians and the people of the Italian peninsula who witnessed the uprising differed significantly. This book re-examines the phenomenon of slave revolts in the last century of the Roman Republic. Instead of viewing Spartacus and the preceding uprisings through the lens of modern narratives, Sotirios F. Drokalos situates them within the context of the transformation of Roman society during a time marked by civil wars, elite competition, agrarian crisis, and increasing reliance on forced labor. Based on primary sources, the book challenges common modern myths and presents a well-founded and accessible account that interweaves military, economic, and political history. From the fields of Sicily and the mines of Laurion to the gladiator schools of Capua, the book examines the circumstances that sparked the uprisings, the rebels' tactical successes, and the fierce Roman response that ultimately crushed them. Analyzing the three Servile Wars of the Roman era within their historical context, the book offers a balanced and critically informed account as part of the tensions that paved the way for Rome's transition from Republic to Empire.
