Magic is a word that is so familiar, seems unambiguous and undoubted in its meaning - but is it really? A generally accepted definition does not yet exist. And what is Roman magic? The book approaches this question from an archaeological perspective. The basis of the examination is formed by all objects from Roman Trier that can be labelled "magic thing or miracle cure". This colourful spectrum allows deeper insights into magical thinking and action, which was a natural part of the everyday world of antiquity.
Magic served the human need to actively influence life, was to a certain extent a means of personal crisis management. With it and the help of supernatural powers, people hoped to bring about things and events. Magic also appears as a timeless phenomenon and transmits objects and systems of thought in often fascinating similarity. The book therefore invites the reader on an entertaining tour through the ages and into supernatural spheres.
