In 332 BC, Alexander the Great defied the sea by building a pier to reach the island of Tyre, the rich and powerful Phoenician city that resisted him. This action combined technical ingenuity, force and propaganda, turning the siege into an event that would shape historical memory. Through an analysis of ancient sources and the long reception of the myth of Tyre, the book shows how this episode became an ideal model of conquest over the centuries. The Phoenician city was not only a paradigm for the perfect siege, but also for the successful overcoming of the obstacles imposed by nature itself. Its memory also contributed to transferring the image of Alexander to other rulers, from Antigonus Monophthalmos to modern generals and statesmen such as Alessandro Farnese and Richelieu, in a symbolic continuity between war, politics and rule.
