A series of Confederate victories at the Second Battle of Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville led to the invasion of Pennsylvania by General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in June 1863. As Lee headed for Harrisburg, the state capital, General George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac attempted to catch up with him. Although neither general intended to fight in the small crossroads town of Gettysburg, a skirmish broke out on 1 July when advance units of the Confederate army encountered outposts of a Union cavalry brigade. Three days of fierce fighting ensued. When the gruesome fighting was overit had taken place at such locations as Railroad Cut, Devil's Den, Wheatfield, Little Round Top, and Culp's Hill, culminating in Pickett's desperate assault on 3 JulyLee's army was in retreat, and Meade had won a great victory for the North. Based on a deep knowledge of the battle and the battlefield, and driven by a compelling narrative, They Met at Gettysburg is the classic account of the greatest battle ever fought on American soil.
