The story of a Lancaster bomber, its raid on Dortmund, its crew and their crash in Wuppertal-Schöller.
In the winter of 2013, the author received a tip about a Royal Air Force bomber that had crashed. This is said to have happened in the area of Wuppertal-Schöller during World War 2. An exciting search for parts of the aircraft began, together with other volunteers from the LVR Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments in the Rhineland. Through intensive research, the events surrounding the plane's crash can now be recounted for the first time.
Where did the plane come from? Who was on board the bomber? What was the course of the attack on Dortmund? Who survived the crash? What do contemporary witnesses report about the crash? What was still to be found at the crash site after more than 70 years? What happened to the prisoners and what did the International Red Cross report about the POW camp? These and many other questions are answered in this book. Included are details about the attack on Dortmund, the crash in Schöller, the plane and its crew, explanations of what was found and much more. Contemporary witness accounts from Dortmund and Schöller bring the reader closer to this part of local history. Excerpts from the diary of a crew member about his experiences during the crash, the escape attempt, the interrogations and imprisonment provide further insights. Over 150 pictures and illustrations round off the story of those involved.
Marcel Lesaar, born in 1967, savings bank business economist, has long been intensively involved in family research and has been an honorary staff member of the LVR Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments in the Rhineland since 2013. He thus combines his interest in archaeology and local history and enjoys prospecting and research. He is the author of the books "Lancaster crash in Wuppertal-Schöller", "Bomber crash in Mettmann-Metzkausen" and one of the four authors of the book "Abgestürzt - Die Geschichte von fünf im 2. Weltkrieg in Langenberg, Neviges, Mettmann und Wuppertal abgestürzt Halifax-Bombern und deren Besatzungen".
