A volume from the series "Battles - Stages in World History". In the autumn of 1916, high above London, German Zeppelins were the first long-range bombers in history to meet the fighter planes of the British Army and Navy. The air battles of 1916 marked the climax and the beginning of the end of the first strategic bombing campaign. Frederik C. Gehrhardt describes how, among other things, the rapid development of aviation meant that it was now possible to attack production sites, transport routes and civilian populations.
Hailing as a wonder weapon in Germany, the Zeppelins were roundly condemned in England for bombing civilians, women and children as so-called "baby killers". The air raids, together with the use of poison gas at Ypres and the sinking of the passenger liner "Lusitania", contributed significantly to shaping the image of the Germans as "barbaric Huns".
