Crash of two Boeing B 17 Flying Fortresses near Königsdorf and Frechen.
The fate of two American bomber crews involved in the daylight raid on the Cologne area on 15 October 1944. Once captured by German air defences, the crews of the planes were more or less helpless. Their only chance to save their lives was either to parachute over enemy territory or to risk a dangerous emergency landing. The entire route from the launch point to the crash site itself could be documented in minute detail on the basis of statements, records and on-board radio of the crews. The individual fates after the jump could be clarified, as well as the whereabouts of the crew members killed in the crash.
