Volume 62 of the "Europe @ War" series sheds light on a little-known yet significant episode in Central European history on the eve of World War II: the brief but fierce border conflict that erupted in March 1939 between Hungary and the newly formed Slovak State. While the Third Reich's annexation of Czech territories often takes center stage in history books, in this work, Csaba B. Stenge brings into the spotlight the parallel struggle between the newly independent Slovakia and a revisionist Hungary over the strategically vital territories of Carpathian Ukraine. The narrative offers a meticulous reconstruction of the initial aerial engagements fought by both the fledgling Royal Hungarian Air Force and the Slovak Air Force. The author examines the early reconnaissance flights, air raids, and ground-support missions conducted under difficult weather conditions and with limited resources. The chaos and technical challenges of an emerging air war are described in vivid detailincluding the dogfights and the retaliatory strike on the Spiská Nová Ves airfieldrevealing the navigational errors and tactical improvisations that characterized this "baptism of fire" for both air forces. These engagements provide valuable insights into military readiness, coordination, and the realities of air warfare as it evolved in the mid-20th century. This revised and expanded new edition features a thoroughly updated text, supplemented with additional details and fresh insights derived from the author's further research. The captions accompanying the color profiles have been revised and expanded to incorporate additional technical and operational information regarding the aircraft depicted; furthermore, a series of new color profiles has been commissioned specifically for this edition. The volume is further enhanced by the inclusion of additional photographs and a new appendix, thereby further expanding the scope and depth of the work. Drawing upon years of researchincorporating rare, surviving archival records as well as the recollections of veteransthis volume transcends mere strategic analysis: it pays tribute to the human toll of the conflict and sheds light on events that long remained shrouded in obscurity or were previously known only in fragments. Featuring detailed appendices, rare photographs, color illustrations, and pilot biographies, this work serves as an essential reference for military historians and aviation enthusiasts alike, documenting a forgotten episode that, for a brief period, redrew the borders of Central Europe.
