Volume 23 of the series "Potsdamer Schriften zur Militärgeschichte". During the First World War, air forces advanced to become an indispensable part of modern warfare. In the shadow of the Western Front, the activities of the German air force on the Eastern Front have remained almost unexplored. They are of particular interest because it was precisely on this front that, for the first time in military history, air forces were systematically deployed in a war of movement. This fact is examined by looking at Eastern Europe as a "space". In addition to factors such as geography, infrastructure and the local climate as well as their effects on air warfare, the tactics, experiences and representations of the German air force in the East are analysed. In this way, a first contribution is made to the study of air warfare on the Eastern Front in World War I.
