The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom fighter-bomber was originally developed for the US Navy and first flew in spring 1958. It entered service with the US Navy in 1961 and with the Fleet Air Arm and RAF in the UK in 1969. The Phantom F-4 is considered one of the most versatile fighter aircraft ever built and was the fastest and highest flying aircraft in the US Navy. It was flown by both US military demonstration teams (Navy Blue Angels and Air Force Thundercats) from 1969 to 1973. It ended its service with the RAF in 1991. In Phantom Boy, 13 contributors take readers on a journey around the world and tell of adventures in the Falkland Islands, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Far East and Germany. There are anecdotes about reconnaissance missions, encounters with the Russian Tupolevs, record flights and life on HMS Ark Royal.
