In 1949, the Iron Curtain was drawn across Europe, and the ensuing Cold War between the Western NATO nations and the Soviet-dominated Warsaw Pact lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. NATO and Warsaw Pact naval forces were spread across the world's oceans, with the mighty forces of the US Navy's 2nd Fleet patrolling the North Atlantic and the 6th Fleet stationed in the Mediterranean. The age of nuclear-powered supercarriers began in 1957 with the USS "Forrestal", while the Soviet Union's first aircraft carrier, the "Kiev", entered service in 1975. In "Over Cold War Seas", aviation author Michael Napier examines the development of naval air power from 1949 to 1989, covering all major types of naval aircraft, both fixed-wing and helicopters, which entered service in the 1950s for light transport or rescue duties and evolved into multi-role aircraft capable of anti-submarine warfare and airborne early warning missions. The detailed text is supplemented by a large number of first-hand reports on flight operations during the Cold War and over 240 contemporary photographs.
