As with the four previous Colour Conundrum Compendiums, the articles reproduced here have not been reproduced in the order of their original publication, but loosely grouped into three sections on a common theme and arranged chronologically within that section. The first section is the most diffuse, as it deals with general principles rather than specific subject areas. The chapter Detail Markings covers the period from 1916 to 1970, and the markings described therein apply to a wide variety of types and are used in conjunction with a wide variety of colour schemes. This section also contains the first chapter with new and previously unpublished material presented here, namely a consolidated list of the RAF Vocabulary of Stores Section 33B for the Second World War period from 1936 to 1945, the result of around 30 years of research. The second section deals largely with the Second World War period and contains subsections dealing with the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm, the latter comprising the second chapter of new material. The third section deals with the post-war period and includes an important update on the subject of Arctic camouflage, made possible by the release of previously secret documents in the years since the original article was published.
