The F-111 was developed in the 1960s by General Dynamics and was a pioneer in variable wings, afterburner turbofan engines and automatic terrain-following radar for low-altitude, high-speed flight. Its design influenced later variable-wing aircraft, and some of its advanced features are now standard. Due to relatively high maintenance costs following budget cuts after the end of the Cold War, the US Air Force decided in the 1990s to retire its F-111 fleet.
