The Pacific Profiles series presents the most accurate profiles of aircraft from the Second World War that saw action in the Pacific War. This 18th volume covers two types developed in Great Britain that served in large numbers with the RAAF. A total of around 1,280 Beauforts and Beaufighters were delivered and served in fifteen squadrons as well as in various training and support units. From the end of 1942, both types were deployed on the front lines against Japan. The Beaufort initially had a niche role as a torpedo bomber, but later made a name for itself in Australia, New Guinea and the Dutch East Indies as a light bomber, maritime reconnaissance aircraft and through numerous support missions. The Beaufighter was a heavily armed low-level fighter that served in the same areas of operation and frequently undertook coastal patrols to hunt Japanese barges. Later versions were equipped with rockets by the RAAF. It is noteworthy that both types were manufactured in Australia and their immense contribution to the RAAF's war effort is often overlooked. The missions were so intense that around 600 young men lost their lives flying Beauforts and Beaufighters, both in combat and in a variety of accidents. This volume contains technical details on the various versions of both types and shows the surprisingly diverse marking schemes of the individual operational units. It also provides brief historical overviews of the squadrons.
