Description
In four sections, the volume takes an illuminating look at the beginnings of military aviation and the early air battles during World War 1. The first chapter charts the beginnings of powered flight in general and the humble beginnings of the military's use of the new medium of 'aircraft'. The second chapter reports on the development of the British aircraft industry and introduces the first manufacturing companies such as the "Royal Aircraft Factory", the "Short Brothers" or "Handley Page". Chapter 3 is then devoted to the experience of air warfare on the British home front, an entirely new experience in the war. The concluding fourth section then describes the air war on the actual war fronts and the use of the aircraft in its various roles as reconnaissance, fighter and bomber.
